Guitar Hero was such a hit with the young children and even adults for that matter that it has inspired them to seek professionals lessons to actually learn how to play a real guitar. A video game so addicting and fun that it actually makes the players want to learn to play real instruments. After Guitar Hero made its debut there have been many spin off's of this concept by various companies trying to jump on the guitar game band wagon.
The direct competition of Guitar Hero came, well, from the original people who actually created Guitar Hero, Harmonix. Red Octane was bought by Activision in June 2006 and paid $100 million dollars to acquire the Guitar Hero franchise. Harmonix teamed up with MTV and EA Games to develop the most popular music game series on the market today, Rock Band.
Rock Bandallows the player to player as any one of four members of a band. You can play as a lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, or even vocals. Rock Band was the first game on the market to showcase the full selection of instruments. Since the release of Rock Band, as like Guitar Hero, a lot of game companies on the market were trying to jump on the full band game band wagon and there were a lot of spin off's of this series as well.
Rock Band 2 the sequel to the original hit the market on September 14, 2008, this time featuring a lot better quality instruments and have been made wireless for better playing experience. Rock Band 2 included 84 songs as well as a coupon for a download of a 20-song add-on pack. If you owned the original Rock Band 1 game you can also transfer all the games from the original game to the new game to even further more extend your music library. If you want even more of a variety of songs, the Rock Band series has over 500 songs available for purchase and download on the Play Station 3 Network or the XBOX Live Marketplace.
The main reply to this was the release of Rock Band 1, and Rock Band 2, came in October 2008 with the release of Guitar Hero World Tour (Guitar Hero 4) from Activision. Although the die-hard Guitar Hero fans may argue that the Guitar Hero series is the best music game on the market, the game falls short by far from Rock Band 2. Like Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero World Tour comes bundled with a wireless, guitar, drum set, and microphone, but the game play, note layout in the tracks, and overall enjoyment does not compare to Rock Band 2.
The Rock Band series is truly the dominant music game series on the market to date, and chances are will remain on top, since, Guitar Hero was originally created by the creators of Rock Band anyways. Harmonix have been in the music game market since the beginning, and obviously they are way ahead of their competition. Although there is no Rock Band 3 in the picture for 2009, it is highly anticipated to hit the market some time in 2010.
Although spin off's of these two popular music games continue to appear on the market they don't even compare in quality, game play, number of songs, or enjoyment. Rock Revolution by Konami tried to compete with the Guitar Hero and Rock Band series, although the instruments are of good quality, they need a lot of work to bring the game up to the level of their competitors. Hopefully we will see some better releases from these spin off games in there second releases, as we all know, perfection takes time and does not come overnight.
